Functional items Spark Joy® too
KonMari method® on tools
Tidying and decluttering… you are on a roll! Sorting through your clothes and joy checking your books may have even been easier and more fun than you thought it would be. But then you reach the komono category and you have to determine wether the lunch bags spark joy to you, if the rake makes you happy, and if the hammer suits your ideal lifestyle. How do you determine that?! What does Marie Kondo’s tidying method say about tools and functional items?
“Keep only those things that Spark Joy®” - a sidenote
The number one rule is to keep what Sparks Joy®. You may have seen this phrase or heard of it over the past years and if you have started tidying with the KonMari method®, you will certainly know it. But you know what? Functional items can spark joy too! Yes, for real. And it’s an important sidenote to the golden rule of tidying “only keep what makes you happy”.
Finding joy in a cleaning bucket
How do you apply the KonMari method® to functional items? What does Marie Kondo say about tools and appliances?
If you’re thinking your cleaning bucket doesn’t necessarily make you happy, believe me I understand. But you see, if you have multiple buckets and you always use a specific one, you could ask yourself which one you’d like to keep? Or you could ask yourself what number of buckets you’re comfortable with keeping. However, if there’s just one bucket, and you occasionally need one, this item can spark joy to you purely because of its functionality.
Imagine how impractical it would be when you need to use a bucket and you realise you don’t have one. That would definitely not spark joy!
Functionality Sparks Joy® too!
So, when you’re decluttering don’t throw out all the items that don’t make you as happy as your favourite jeans or that favourite book of yours, because functionality Sparks Joy® too!
