Routines in your home
In an earlier blog post I’ve talked about how to keep your house tidy. One of my tips was creating certain routines for your household. I always liked routine but when the baby was born last year it really felt like a lifesaver!
It seemed I was doing laundry, dishes and tidying all day long. And then there were other chores like grocery shopping, cooking and of course taking care of a new born… It drove me crazy and after stomping around the house in a bad mood for the umpteenth time I realised I needed help.
And those routines, they really helped.
Here are some of my daily routines.
After breakfast I put load of laundry in the washer, if there is laundry to be done that day. A quick check to see if it’s clothes, bed sheets or a diaper laundry that day and in it goes. By the way, I don’t bother sorting my clothes into a hundred different piles. I just add a colour catcher and throw it all in together. I only take out the delicates and laundry that needs to be washed at 60 degrees. The colour catchers have done a fine job so far and it reduces the number of loads a week. Which is perfect, because let’s face it doing laundry is a necessity not a hobby ;)
I then take some time to fold and put away dry laundry of the day before . Mind you, I only do this in the morning. If the laundry is dry earlier than the next morning, I’ll put it in a basket and stick that in a cupboard so it’s out of sight. I just don’t want to be folding all day long so I limit myself to that one time of the day.
In the evening I toss my tea towel, kitchen towel and cloth in the laundry bin. And I hang up clean ones for the next day. That way I will be sure to not grab a dirty cloth when I need to clean the baby’s face after breakfast in the morning.
Vacuuming is done nearly every day, after dinner when things have fallen on the floor because well… baby! Every day? Yep, every day. I’ll just quickly vacuum the corner near the table and skip the rest of the house if that’s not too dusty.
Just some small examples of adding routine. Because when something has become routine, you don’t have to think about it and it will cost you significantly less energy. In the end your home has to work for you, not the other way around!
Which thing could you start doing at set times of the day so you won’t have to think about them during the rest of the day?
