3 golden rules of tidying
Tidying is an art. Sometimes it can feel like a you can spend your entire day cleaning and tidying up - especially if you reserve a set day of the week for it. But really, tidying up is a skill you can learn and master!
Here are my three golden rules of tidying! What should you keep in mind when you are decluttering?
Keep only those things that make you happy. If you tidy your home with the goal of keeping those things that spark joy to you, in the end you will have a home that fills you with joy! Whether you end up having lots of books, or have a home filled with plants, wether the feel is completely minimalistic or the exact opposite, it will be a home that truly fits you.
Focus op positivity when you’re decluttering. OK, here’s what I mean. The question “what can I throw out?” focusses on the fact that you need to get rid of stuff. You’re looking for the bad qualities of things in your home, on which to base your decision that it needs to go. While you can also look at the other side of the coin, and focus on what makes you happy. Then you won’t end up keeping things simply because they don’t have any bad qualities, but actually because you notice how much you enjoy their presence in your life.
Keep the end goal in mind. Picture your perfect home, what does it look like? Is it a light space? Colourful? Filled with plants? Always ready to entertain guests? A space of calm?
Before you start your tidying process, try to envision what it will be like living in your home once you are completely done tidying. Be specific, after all; it’s your home and it should be your happy place! I can’t stress enough how much having your end goal clear will help you during the tidying process. Firstly it helps you decide what makes you happy, as you can ask yourself '‘does this suit my ideal home and lifestyle?”. And secondly, you will need having something to look forward to during the process. Because that process… well it can be long, or hard. Sometimes frustrating, a lot of work, and at times you may feel like giving up. And that is exactly when you will be able to remember yourself what you are doing it for; your ideal home and life.
